Pictured here in 'Checkmate' the Butler gives an air of importance. With the aid of a Top Hat Administrative official, who carries not only the chessboard but also the open umbrella thus offering protection against the sun. The butler projects an image which puts him higher in the pecking order within the Village.
The butler would appear to be a keen student of chess, his chessboard set out as he follows the moves made on the chessboard below the bandstand. And yet some years ago it was suggested that it is actually the butler who is making the moves, which are then made on the human chessboard!
